Reedsburg Airport Official Newsletter
Spring 2010
It has been a long winter but spring is right around the corner. We have been busy with flight training and keeping the airport and hangers open for use. Winter provided aircraft owner’s time to complete upgrades to their aircraft. We have been busy installing a factory overhauled engine into our Skyhawk (completed last week). Another pilot on the field had the Garmin 500 PFD/MFD installed in a Cessna T210, including WAAS capability and synthetic vision. It is exciting to see the advances in avionics technology designed for piston singles and twins. Chart reading technology has made great strides. The Garmin 696, Kindle, and soon to be released Ipad provide pilots with just a few choices for electronic chart books. In our opinion, the type of tool needed to read charts should fit what is best for your needs, so research accordingly. We would be happy to help you figure out a solution to your chart needs. Solverson Aviation will not be providing IFR and most VFR charts due to recent rule changes in the chart agent system. We will still offer sectional charts for the immediate area, so please plan accordingly for longer VFR and all IFR flight plans.

SPRING FLYING
Now that spring is here many of you
will fly or start your airplanes for the first time in a couple of months.
Winter can be
brutal on pilots and aircraft. Even though it is warm during the day, you
may still need to preheat not only the engine, but also the cockpit. This
will heat the radios,
instruments, and also the interior. Throw a couple of blankets
over the engine cowling and propeller, this will trap more heat. Many
pilots forget about their battery. Flying regularly
will prevent a dead battery, but think
about throwing a charger on it. Also, have
TC change to
the correct weight oil and remove
the winter
kit for your aircraft. Remember to fill up tires and struts to the correct
pressure. Spring is approaching fast, which means THUNDERSTORMS. Use the weather
computers the state of Wisconsin
provides pilots at the many locations
throughout the state to check for
adverse weather.
Piper Comanche 180

If you are ambitious, with one stop you can travel to Washington DC, Orlando Fl, or see the Alamo in Texas on your own watch.
The Challenge of retractable gear, constant speed prop
and customized syllabus will help renew your motivation to fly. 5 hours
for complex aircraft endorsement with your customized syllabus. For
example, 2 hours landing take offs 3 hours x country or 3 hours of
instrument training. Here is a link to the performance specs http://www.planeandpilotmag.com/aircraft/specifications/piper/comanche-180.html
Start you instrument training today, become a safer more proficient pilot. Even if you don't use the instrument rating the investment in yourself will yield a more proficient, safe and confident pilot.
DEADLINE FOR PLASTIC LICENSE
If you still are using a paper pilot’s license, be aware that March 31, 2010 is the deadline to convert it to the new plastic version. Please follow this link to get started:

ENGLISH ENDORSEMENT
If you are planning to fly internationally (Canada), please be aware of a new requirement stating that the pilot is English proficient on their certificate. The following website, http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/English_proficiency/
will give you the specifics on this requirement. If you are interested in flying internationally, please contact us and we can go through the requirements with you.
AVIATION ORGANIZATIONS & WEBSITES
Are you currently a member of an aviation organization? Looking for an aviation website that could be helpful? We encourage all pilots to check out what is going on with the aviation organizations in the state of Wisconsin. WATA, WAMA, WBAA are a couple acronyms you might recognize but know little about. The organizations have your interests as GA pilots in mind. Please take an active interest in the organizations that are fighting for your right to fly.

NEWS AROUND THE AIRPORT
PROJECTS The State BOA and the City of Reedsburg have taken ownership of the Star Charter hanger at Reedsburg. This hanger will be moved to a new location on the east side of the airport and used for snow removal and mowing equipment storage. Once this hanger is removed the FAA can move ahead with placing straight in GPS approaches at C35 (next summer) which the airport has been surveyed for.
John Chamberlin (Cessna T210) recently retrofitted his aircraft with the Garmin 500 primary flight display and multi-function flight display. WAAS capability was also added with the upgrade. John has posted some pictures on Facebook.
THANK YOU We would like to thank all of our customers for their continued support through the past 5 years! We look forward to working with you in the near future!
